MeepCity is a social hangout/role-play experience created by alexnewtron. The games features mini-games, fishing mechanics, role-play aspects and formerly, parties.

On February 16, 2022, MeepCity was put under review after news reports of adult content abuse were published. MeepCity reopened on the same day, although missing the party feature.

Gameplay[]

MeepCity Coins (Dontaskwhy)

Meepcity Coins

The main purpose of the game is being a social or roleplay hangout. This means buying items or playing games is completely optional. There is a currency called coins. Coins are used to customize your house (such as colors, structure, and furniture), buy and customize a pet Meep, or buying fishing rods. It is very similar to Club Penguin.

There are multiple ways to get coins:

  • Selling fish, which is obtained by fishing and get meep coins from playing the game.
  • Playing games, such as the minigame in the Pizza Shack, Star Ball, MeepCity Racing, and four-in-a-row.
  • Selling plants.
  • Staying in the game for a period of time.
  • Buying coins by clicking "Buy Coins". The coins are converted from Robux.
  • Gift explosions.
  • Gift coins.

Fishing[]

MeepCity - Fishing Tutorial GUI

Fishing one of many ways to earn coins. There are fishing areas on The Playground and The Neighborhood. Fishing areas multiple piers, allowing multiple players to fish at once.

To fish, the player must walk onto an unoccupied fishing pier. After going onto the pier, they are equipped with a fishing rod. There are "dark spots" on the lake, meaning there is fish in that area. Players must cast their line onto the dark spot, or have the dark spot come to their cast line, to obtain a fish. To do that, they must aim at the dark spot and charge up power. The more power they have, the farther their line will be thrown.

MeepCity - Caught Fish

The notification that appears when the player has caught a fish

When a player cast their line onto a dark spot or when a dark spot heads towards their cast line, they will obtain a fish. Some fish are more valuable than others, therefore selling for more coins. Players can only have 20 fish in their bucket before it is full. To sell the fish, they must go to the Pet Shop, go up to the counter, select the "Sell Fish" button, from there, players must select the fish they would like to sell, and confirm. Players can also go to The Fisherman in The Playground to sell fish, both of which resets their bucket to 0.

The Playground[]

The Playground is the area where players spawn in when then join a server. In addition, The Playground is the main hub to go to different locations in MeepCity (i.e. The Neighborhood, The Plaza, and Town). The Playground has two fishing areas, two morphs (teen and kid), the Parties Portal, the Pet Shop, the Furniture Store, the Toys Stand, the Home Improvement store, and several benches. The Fisherman is also located here.

Parties Portal[]

Meep City - Parties Portal

The Parties Portal, prior to its removal

The Parties Portal was a feature in which players could create or choose and join parties hosted by Plus members. It was located in-between the gateways to the Town and to the Plaza. Prior to the feature's deprecation, players couldn't join a server with more than 50 members.

To join or create a party, the player would have had to walk up to the portal of the Parties portal, where after being touched, it would show a list of concurrent parties. Players could toggle whether or not they want to see parties that were already full by the checkbox on the top right corner. There was also a button players could click to create their own party, however, this was only if the player had the Plus pass

At an unknown date, the ability to name a party was removed, instead being replaced with the user's name, then 'party.' (i.e. "Telamon's Party")

On February 16, 2022, this feature was removed entirely.

MeepCity Racing[]

MeepCity Racing is a racing mini-game styled after the Mario Kart series. Players can race on three available tracks, use items to attack others or defend themselves, customize their kart, and earn coins.

MeepCity: Star Ball[]

MeepCity: Star Ball is an obstacle course mini-game containing four maps, each with 6 levels. Star Ball was originally released prior to MeepCity as a standalone game, where Meeps looked different than their modern counterparts.

Criticism[]

MeepCity has been one of the most widely criticized games in Roblox's history. The main criticism is that the game is often infested with online daters and sexual content, especially in parties. Usually, the people creating the parties use it for inappropriate purposes, using specific words to get around Roblox's filter and role-play sexual acts.

Alexnewtron has also received criticism in relation to these events, as he has done not much to stop the online dating issue.

MeepCity has also been criticized for its similarities to the now shut-down Disney games Toontown Online and Club Penguin. The fishing mechanics and pond, tunnel, teleporting animation and teleporting greeting have often been said to be "Ripped straight from TTO"[citation needed], and the Meeps have a stolen face asset ripped directly from Club Penguin, which eventually made its way into official Roblox merchandise. Disney no longer enforces Toontown or Club Penguin copyright, however, Disney can legally still sue Roblox.

On February 29, 2020, the game was briefly hacked by an exploiter and teleported players to an alternate MeepCity hub with morbid themes and a piñata of what appeared to be alexnewtron's avatar that could be hit with a bat to produce screams as well as preventing players from leaving through the in-game menu.[citation needed] Among other issues, such as avatars being morphed into an avatar resembling an infamous historical leader, and players being given exorbitant amounts of Coins. Before the hackers were stopped by Roblox, they also made the game teleport to a place where players could eat a burger, and then be kicked out after doing so. On February 16, 2022, shortly after reopening, after being placed under review, presumably the same hackers returned and changed players avatars and Coin counts.

Parties were finally removed on February 16, 2022, due to the game being shut down and put under moderation review.

Trivia[]

This section is a trivia section. Please relocate any relevant information into other sections of the article.

  • MeepCity was the only front-page game to support up to 80-player servers as of May 8th, 2018, and also has broken the record for the "2nd Fastest Popularity Rate" (previous record held by Phantom Forces).
  • It had accumulated 200 million visits in less than a year (the first game on Roblox to do so in such a small timeframe), which was celebrated by alexnewtron [1].
  • On January 30, 2018, MeepCity made history on the site as the first-ever place to surpass 1 billion visits.[2]
    • On August 5, 2018, MeepCity also became the first place to surpass 2 billion visits.
    • On February 20, 2020, MeepCity also became the first place to surpass 5 billion visits.
    • On May 8, 2021, MeepCity became the third place to surpass 10 billion visits.

  • A MeepCity Fisherman toy was made with a code that granted the player a Meep Hat and 10,000 coins upon redemption, along with a Pet Seller toy with unknown rewards.
  • MeepCity is based off a game created by the same developer in January 2012 named 'SocialMeeps'. The game was an interactive social hangout online akin to the likes of 2010 MMOs . The game was not on Roblox, and instead was hosted on its own servers.
    • Eventually, SocialMeeps was shut down due to unknown reasons and later remade as MeepCity in February 2016.
  • In the first 24 hours when Steam Greenlight launched, alexnewtron decided to submit MeepCity to the platform.[3][4]
