The first, official Roblox TV advertisement.

The Roblox TV Advertisements are a series of advertisements that advertise Roblox. These "Made for TV" commercials have yet to air across the United States, possibly due to lack of funds, but has aired in Miami, Philadelphia, and Salt Lake City.[1]


First Roblox commercial[]

Shedletsky announced that Roblox would be making a TV commercial on IronNoob on June 9, 2011, and enlisted the help of many other developers, saying that it would be "a ton of work for me to do all by myself."[2] In addition to the IronNoob post, Shedletsky contacted GollyGreg via Twitter to ask for assistance in building, filming, and shooting the "official" Roblox commercial.[3] Shedletsky emphasized visual quality in the development of this commercial, since it was going to be aired on TV, and used a hacked Roblox client to record the scenes at 1920x1200 resolution with no obstructing 2D visual components.[4] Shedletsky also built a custom PC (nicknamed "The BEAST") to record this commercial.[5]

The project was originally planned to air on many major TV networks, but the decision was later changed due to the lack of marketing funds. The crew consisted of:

A "Super Rough Cut" version of the commercial was uploaded by Shedletsky on YouTube. Later, that same week, the finalized version was uploaded. The song used is "Radical Shift" by Alberto.

Developers who worked with Shedletsky collectively used the PowerUsers account to build scenes for the commercial, notably the "car chase" and of the "club" scenes. Additional assets for Scene IV were uploaded to the TelaSafe account.[6] Everyone who helped work on this commercial were given the Bling Boy's Raiment item, and some were even given Lifetime OBC subscriptions for free.[7]

As of March 6, 2021, the video has garnered over 4,358,374 views, although ratings have been disabled. This video's main character is Bling Boy, who is visible in nearly every scene of the commercial. They're usually seen wearing the Robloxian 2.0 bundle and the Epic Face.[8]

Criticism[]

The old ROBLOX commercial repeatedly receives criticism from the ROBLOX community, especially on the now defunct ROBLOX Forums, about minor themes in the commercial (e.g. the narrator's voice & tone) and varies to harsher criticism. Many elements, such as the dancing scene, were not possible at the time of recording unless the experience had a feature that allowed their avatar to move that way, leading to the theory that this was staged or edited. Also notable is that TimmyMcPwnage was not a real account in the commercial, effectively making this false advertising within the company.

The commercial sparked growing trends on ROBLOX. Quotes from the commercial, "IT'S FREEEEE!" being the most popular quote from the commercial, spun-off groups and alternate accounts/name snipes. The quote, "ITS FREEEEE!" has been heavily used in ROBLOX videos, providing proof to the false advertising involved. The most popular video of this type being "ROBLOX : IT'S FREE" by YouTube account SharpTH.

Errors[]

  • The first place and player shown on the commercial does not exist, but it was found out the both player and place exist, but the place was different than the original one. The issue was failed as Robloxians found the game.
  • Owen0202 exists but the place doesn't exist.
  • The vehicles on the next place didn't function that way and the avatars are plain.
  • When the red car passed the green building, the Robloxian's face changed.
  • third place existed, along with the player, at the time this video was released, there was no way to dance like the Players shown on the third place, though it was a script in-game.
  • There are millions of players but some players are deactivated and some are alts, guests, noobs, bots and players that quit. It turned out they were just NPCs in the actual game.
  • At the end, when labeled as a free game, there was no mention of Builders Club, Robux, Tickets, gift cards, clothes, etc., which aren't free.

Second Roblox commercial[]

A second 30-second Roblox commercial video was uploaded on August 23, 2012. As of May 28, 2020, the video has reached over 5,332,139 views.

The announcer in the commercial first states in the video that "Millions of players are building on Roblox". Second, the commercial provides a 3D and actual appearance of a place that closely resembles the Eiffel Tower built by a player who is named Tom. Next, he shows Carbon131, who is named Alex, being credited for creating an experimental jet", with the place that is presented being Jet Wars: Advanced Battle, in which a red F-18 Hornet fighter plane flies over an archipelago and attacks a blue aircraft carrier. Afterwards, the announcer states that a user in Roblox whose real life name is Kim "built a first-person shooter", with a sniper scope aiming at a player wearing the Space Trooper Package and shooting and killing it, with the killed player spinning around. Finally, the announcer of the commercial states that "the players also built a medieval fortress, yacht racing game, urban deathmatch, cursed graveyard, tall ship, tower defense, star fighter, coaster, railgun, dump-truck, RTS, wingsuit, RPG, tank, and killer robot." As soon as the announcer finishes the sentences, the stylized title "Roblox" appears with a lot of small red squares fading in in the white background. The announcer says "Roblox. What will you build? Roblox.com", with the sentence "What will you build?" fading out below the title and, eventually, a small ".com" to the right of the title.

Errors[]

  • In some scenes, it doesn't show the actual footage of the games involved.
  • On the first scene, it was the real game footage but the skybox made in 2013, not 2012.
  • On the third scene, sniper scopes on ROBLOX did not work like that in 2012.
  • In the part where it shows what models players built, the models don't exist.
  • In the part where it shows the urban deathmatch, the buildings are white for unknown reasons.
  • In the tower defense part, a Minecraft TNT block is shown.
  • In the Wingsuit part, the new water is shown. The new water didn't exist in 2012, it existed in late 2013.
  • At the end, the ROBLOX logo is outlined instead of showing the 2012–2014 ROBLOX logo.
  • In the commercial, the places have Dynamic Lighting although Dynamic Lighting didn't exist in 2012.

This commercial was a commercial for Roblox toys. It aired in Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States. The commercial revealed the promotional code used to redeem the Spider Cola.

  • Shedletsky originally planned to make a scene that would have resembled a battle in World War II. It would have featured Bling Boy, dressed as a WWII soldier, taking cover behind some sand bags with a group of 3-5 other hardcore/awesome soldiers surrounded by a variety of burned out tanks and military gear. A hoard of zombies would be rushing at the soldiers as they throw grenades and fire rockets.
    • Roblox's Marketing division was "very specific" in advising Shedletsky that they could not use any realistic weapons, especially AK-47s or glocks.[9]
    • Significant progress was made on the WWII scene, but it never made its way into the final version of commercial.[10][11] Nevertheless, it did appear in the Super Rough Cut version of the commercial.
  • In 2015, a shirt based on the ending quote for the first commercial titled It's Free! was published onto the marketplace, it had also won the T-Shirt Design Contest.
